Samuel Lawrence (1754-1827)

He served in the Continental Army from 1775 to 1778 and fought at the Battle of Bunker Hill. He rose to the rank of Major and was Adjutant under General Sullivan at the Battle of Rhode Island. After the war, he returned to his native Groton and in 1793 helped found Groton Academy (now known as the Lawrence Academy at Groton). He married Susanna Parker and had seven children (listed above) who lived to adulthood including two of Boston's best known philanthropists, Amos and Abbott.
