He was born in Boston, the eldest son of the U.S. Secretary of the Treasury under President John Adams. After graduating from Harvard, he settled at Athens, New York, where he married Amelia Prevost. She died in 1822, and he moved to Michigan with $80,000 two years later. He established the village of Dexter in 1824 before returning to Athens. In 1826, he came back to Dexter with his new wife, Susan Dunham, and they lived in a frame house on the Huron River. Susan died in 1828. That same year, he married his third wife, Millicent Bond, and they lived at Gordon Hall from 1843.
