She was born at Charleston, South Carolina. In about 1821, she met her future husband at "Morrisania" in Westchester County, New York. She was visiting with her sister, Mary, who also met her future husband that day. Her son recalled, "I have heard that the coming of the Misses Ward from Charleston to New York was something of an event in the restricted society of that time, and doubtless many young men were interested in the advent of these heiresses". Sarah married Edward Armstrong in 1822 at the house of Doctor Wilkes at St. John's Park. They had seven children, of whom four survived to adulthood, notably the stained glass artist, Maitland Armstrong.
