Stephen DeLancey (1663-1741)

"Etienne de Lancy" Member of the Governor's Council of New York

Associated Houses

Fraunces Tavern

Manhattan

He was from an old, noble Huguenot family who escaped France after the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685. Anglicizing his name to "Stephen" he sold the family jewels which were his inheritance and with that money embarked on what would be a highly successful career as a merchant at New York.
