Thomas Haines Newbold (1814-1869)

Thomas Haines Newbold, of New York City & "Fern Tor" Poughkeepsie

He was born at Pelham, New York. He kept a townhouse in New York City at West 28th Street, just off Fifth Avenue, and had a country home, "Fern Tor" near Poughkeepsie. He was, "a gentleman of independent means" and frequently travelled in Europe where both his daughters (neither of whom married) were born. He was married in 1846 to Mary Elizabeth Rhinelander - the aunt of Edith Wharton - and they were the parents of five children, four of whom (listed above) survived childhood.
