He was born in Virginia and moved with his family to Pulaski County, Georgia. During the War of 1812, he fought with the Georgia Cavalry. When southwest Georgia was opened, he moved again and became a successful planter at the Pebble Hill Plantation. He was elected to the State Legislature and co-founded Thomas County and Thomasville. By his first marriage to Jane Hadley he had just one daughter who survived to adulthood, Julia, who built the house on the site of which the present house at Pebble Hill stands today. He was married again in 1839 and died at Pebble Hill.
