He was married in 1786 to Elizabeth Bowdoin Temple, daughter of Sir John Temple, 8th Bt., of Stowe, Lieutenant-Governor of New Hampshire and the 1st British Consul-General to the United States. They were the parents of fourteen children, eleven of whom (listed) survived to adulthood. They lived at - and extensively enlarged - 1 Walnut Street (see images), built in 1804 to the design of Charles Bulfinch. and afterwards occupied by Thomas Dixon and then Robert Means Mason.
