He was born at Salem, Massachusetts. He graduated from Harvard (1782) and tutored then there. He became a Physician at Cambridge where he lived at the Apthorp House. He married Mary Emilia Elizabeth Belcher, a grand-daughter of Governor Belcher, and they were the parents of two children, William and Mary.
