William Henry Jephson (1782-1867)

William Henry Jephson, of New York City

He was born at his family's ancestral seat, Mallow Castle in County Cork, before returning to New York. His "rakish" father returned to Ireland at the conclusion of the Revolution and left William (his eldest son and heir) with his mother. He briefly entered into business with Joseph Reade, establishing Reade & Jephson. Having only unpleasant associations with IreĀland, he allowed the cutting of the entail to his Irish property so that his half-brother might succeed to the estate (Mallow Castle). William died at 24 East 33rd Street on March 11, 1867. He left three daughters as his co-heiresses.
