He died at his home, Homewood Villa, an Italianate mansion on the Homewood estate that was demolished by John Hopkins University in 1954. William did not enter business but lived off his family fortune and was knowledgeable on plants and wildlife. He gifted the Homewood estate with 179-acres and $1 million to John Hopkins University.
