He was preceded in the Presidency by William Howard Taft and after serving two terms in office for the Democratic Party he was succeeded in 1921 by Warren G. Harding. His Vice-President throughout was Thomas R. Marshall and they held office throughout World War I. In 1885, he married Ellen Axson who was the mother to his three children. She died in 1914 and in the following year he married Edith Bolling.
