Chateau Labottière

16 Rue de Tivoli, Bordeaux

Built 1773, for the brothers Jacques (1715-1798) and Antoine Labottiere (1717-1794), the founders of the first regular newspaper in Bordeaux - Affiches - which distinguished itself by calling on its readers to contribute their views and stories too. This was their summer home, then in the country outside Bordeaux and set within its own park that has since been reduced from 250 to 25 acres. The park and house were designed/remodelled by the well-known local architect, Étienne Laclotte (1728-1812)....
This mansion is not to be confused with the "Petit Hotel Labottiere" built within its grounds by the brother's uncle. The James B. Duke House on Fifth Avenue in New York is an almost identical replica of the Chateau Labottiere. Today the chateau - sometimes nicknamed "the Trianon of Bordeaux" - is better known as L’Institut Culturel Bernard Magrez, hosting modern and contemporary art exhibitions from public and private collections.
