Remodelled in 1715, for Robert Bertie (1660-1723), 4th Earl of Lindsey & 17th Baron Willoughby de Eresby, to mark his creation as the 1st Duke of Ancaster. The facade was designed by Sir John Vanbrugh and the parkland was laid out by Lancelot "Capability" Brown. Grimsthorpe has been the ancestral home of the de Eresby family since 1516 and today it sits on a 3,000-acre estate owned by Jane Heathcote-Drummond-Willoughby (b.1934), 28th Baroness de Eresby, grand-daughter of the redoubtable Nancy Astor, the first woman to sit on the House of Commons who died here in 1964.
