Kerelaw Castle

Kerelaw Castle, Stevenston, Ayrshire

Built circa 1191 and remodelled in 1488. In 1655, Kerelaw was purchased by John Hamilton (1600-1694) who renamed the castle Grange and became styled "of Grange". John was the great-grandfather of James Hamilton (1718-1799) who grew up at Grange before settling in the West Indies. His son, Alexander Hamilton (1755-1804), was the celebrated American statesman who named his home Hamilton Grange in recognition of his ancestral home. Kerelaw has been a ruin since the second half of the 19th century.
