Murry Guggenheim House

Cedar & Norwood Ave., West Long Branch, Monmouth Co., New Jersey

Completed in 1905, for Murry Guggenheim (1858-1939) and his wife, Leonie Bernheim (1865-1959). Sited across the street from Shadow Lawn, it took two years to build and was designed by the famous architectural duo, Carrère & Hastings, of New York. Inspired by the Grand Trianon at Versailles, it was awarded the Gold Medal by the New York Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (1903)....

After Mrs Guggenheim died in 1959, the property was transferred to the Murry and Leonie Guggenheim Foundation who transferred it to Monmouth University the following year (1960). After various modifications, the mansion was transformed into a library and named Murry and Leonie Guggenheim Memorial Library. Since then, the house has twice been enlarged (1967 and 2003) and now holds 100,000 books. The old carriage house and stable complex on Cedar Avenue is now the Lauren K. Woods Theater.
