Ravensworth Castle

Ravensworth, Richmondshire, North Yorkshire

Built circa 1201 when King John I visited, it was rebuilt in the 14th century when it was the property of Henry Fitzhugh (d.1356), 1st Baron Fitzhugh. In 1391, he built a moat around the castle and enclosed its 200 surrounding acres, creating a park. In the 16th century, the Fitzhughs began to dismantle the castle, using the stone to construct manor houses. It has remained a ruin ever since. Ravensworth Plantation in Virginia and therefore indirectly Ravensworth in Cobourg are both named for the castle.
