He was both preceded and succeeded in the Presidency by Grover Cleveland. He was voted in with the Republican Party and served one term with Levi P. Morton as his Vice-President. He was the grandson of William Henry Harrison, 9th President of the United States. He married Caroline Scott in 1853 and had two children. After she died, he married Mary Lord in 1896 by whom he had one further child.
