Danford Henry Knowlton (1846-1894)

D. Henry Knowlton, Stockbroker, of Knowlton & Co., New York City

He was born in New York City and graduated from the College of New York. He started his career in the offices of his father, Danford Knowlton, a prominent sugar merchant. He became a partner in Parker, Knowlton & Co., coal merchants, before becoming Senior Partner of the Stock Exchange House, Knowlton & Co. During the Civil War, he fought with the "Silk Stocking" Regiment, the 7th New York Militia. He was, "a prominent figure in society, and a general favorite". He was the first President of the New York Athletic Club and a member of several clubs. He lived between 102 East 38th Street and Stonegate at Balmville, New York. He married Mary Johnes and they had four daughters (1) Edith, Mrs Allan Appleton Robbins (2) Madeleine, Mrs John Elliott Cowdin (3) Natalie, Mrs J. Insley Blair of Blairhame, and (4) Louise.
