She was brought up at Richmond Hill by her mother and stepfather, Major Abraham Mortier. When her mother died, she inherited the mansion, estate, and all its contents. Her first husband, John Appy, was appointed Secretary and Judge Advocate of His Majesty's Forces in America in 1757, but died just four years later. In 1767, she married her second husband Goldsborough (or Goldsbrow) Banyer. They were the parents of three children including Goldsborough Banyer Jr. who married Maria, daughter of John Jay, first Chief Justice of the United States.
