Emery Roth (1871-1948)

Emery Roth, Pre-Eminent New York Architect

Born in what is today Slovakia, Roth came to New York with his family aged 13 in poverty. He started work as a draftsman in Chicago before being taken under the wing of the Vanderbilt's architect of choice, Richard Morris Hunt (1827-1895). Roth went on to design many of New York's most prominent apartment blocks and hotels in the 1920s and 1930s, specializing in the Art Deco and Beaux Arts styles. His works include:
