Hartland St. Clair MacDougall (1840-1917)

He was born in Devon, England. He came with his family to Montreal at age-15 and took up residence with his half-brother, Lorn, at Outremont. Through Lorn's influence, he went into stockbroking with his brother, G. Campbell MacDougall, founding MacDougall Brothers and becoming "one of Canada's foremost financiers". He was a co-founder and President of the Montreal Stock Exchange and Vice-President of the Guarantee Company of North America. He was Major of the 5th Royal Fusiliers of Montreal; a founding member of the Mount Royal Club; a founding member and President of the Forest & Stream Club; and, a director of both the Montreal Hunt and the Montreal Jockey Club. The Montreal Star wrote he was, "loved by all for his kindly disposition, and everywhere respected and admired for his manliness and integrity".

He lived between 500 Sherbrooke Street West and his summer home "Ashburton" at Dorval near to where he played polo. In 1868, he married Elizabeth, daughter of John Smith, a dry goods merchant of Montreal, and through her he was brother-in-law to the brothers Sir Hugh Allan and Andrew Allan. He bequeathed his summer home at Dorval (see images) to his son, Hartland, who sold it in 1919 to J.W. McConnell.
