James Alexander Cantlie (1836-1924)

He was born and educated at Mortlach, Morayshire, in Scotland. He served in the 1st Aberdeenshire Regiment from 1859 to 1863 and was present at the Royal Review in 1861. He was married in 1866 to the sister of the future Lord Mount Stephen and in 1868 at Montreal he established the mercantile firm of Cantlie, Ewan & Co. which was reorganized in 1893 as James A. Cantlie & Co. of which he was the senior partner. He was President of the Montreal Board of Trade in 1885; President of the Canadian Traveller's Association; Vice-President of the Dominion Transport Company; and, Governor of the Montreal General Hospital and Western Hospital. In Montreal, he and his wife lived at 131 Crescent Street before moving to the Shaughnessy House. They were the parents of five children (listed) who lived to adulthood.
