He entered into business with Randolph Hersey who served his apprenticeship under Thomas Dean Bigelow, of Montreal. John's sister, Mary, married Bigelow's son and successor, John Theodore Bigelow, who was the brother-in-law of Charles Hosmer. Together they formed the company of Bigelow, Pillow & Hersey.
