He was born at "Mount Hope" Burlington, New Jersey, and came to Philadelphia as a merchant with his elder brother, William, who lost practically all his inherited fortune. He married Sarah, daughter of Owen Owen, a prosperous farmer in Montgomery County, and they had five children.
