John Hunter (1788-1852)
Hon. John Hunter II of Hunter's Island; New York State Senator
He continued his father's auctioneer business but became more involved in politics. He was a Supervisor of Westchester County before becoming New York State Senator. He was one of the original directors of the Hudson & Delaware Canal. Having sold the family Auction House in 1810, he used some of the profits to build his mansion on Hunter's Island the following year. His mother's second husband was John Broome (1738-1810), Lieutenant-Governor of New York.
