John Hunter III (1833-1914)

Born at Hunters Island, the family estate includes hundreds of acres on both sides of the East River and the Sound. He inherited Hunter Island Mansion in New York from his father Elias son of John Hunter II. He sold the property to Ambrose Kingsland. He became interested in the breeding of American horses. He came to New Rochelle, Colorado, and owned a large stable when trotting was at its height as a sport. He married Miss Annie Middleton, of Middleton Place Charleston South Carolina.
