Jonathan Amory (1770-1828)

"Good Jonathan" Merchant of J & T Amory & Co., Boston, Massachusetts

He was born at Boston and graduated from Harvard (1787). Embarking on a mercantile career, he entered the counting house of his uncle Jonathan Amory's firm, Amory, Taylor & Rogers. After his uncle died in 1797 he went into partnership with James Cutler but Cutler died just two years later and in the following year he formed a successful partnership with his brother, Thomas Coffin Amory. His first wife died young without children. In 1801, he married Mehitable, daughter of Governor James Sullivan and widow of his late business partner, James Cutler. By his second wife, he was the father of seven children and one stepdaughter who reached adulthood.
