Lewis Burwell (1710-1756)

He was educated in England at Cauis College, Cambridge, and was considered one of the most learned men of his time. He served as a Member of the Virginia House of Burgesses; President of the King's Council; and, was Acting Governor of Virginia in 1750. In 1736, he married Mary, daughter of Colonel Francis Willis through he inherited "White Marsh" Plantation in Gloucester County where they lived with their five children (listed above). Their youngest daughter, Rebecca, is remembered for refusing Thomas Jefferson's marriage proposal at her first cousin's home, Carter's Grove.
