Lewis Gaylord Clark (1808-1873)

He was born at Otisco, New York, and was the twin brother of the poet Willis Gaylord Clark. From 1834 to 1861, he was the Editor and Publisher of The Knickerbocker Magazine which by 1840 had become the most influential literary publication of the time in the United States, helped by regular contributions from the literary luminaries of the day such as Washington Irving, William Cullen Bryant, Nathaniel Parker Willis, and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow; and, by Clark's own "Editors Table" and "Gossip with Readers and Correspondents". He and Edgar Allan Poe famously traded insults through their respective publications. Clark's brother-in-law, Joseph R. Curtis, built the magnificent Drayton House at Hyde Park. Clark and his wife, Ella, retired to a "charming villa" at Piermont, New York.
