She was described as, "a cultured Massachusetts beauty". Her brother, Harrison Reed, was Governor of Florida. She founded Milwaukee’s Museum of Fine Arts and helped organize the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association to preserve George Washington’s home, Mount Vernon. In Jacksonville, Florida, she co-founded both All Saints Episcopal Church and St. Luke's Hospital Association of which she was President for 25-years. She and her husband had three sons but they were survived by just one (John), the other two (George and William) having died in childhood.
