Before he was killed, he was engaged to Flora Payne Whitney, the elder daughter of Harry Payne Whitney and Gertrude Vanderbilt. Her father objected to the relationship because he disapproved of the Roosevelt family, particularly Quentin's liberal Republican father, Theodore Roosevelt.
