Sarah (Emerson) Lyman (1762-1784)

Mrs Sarah (Emerson) Lyman

She was a first cousin of William Emerson, father of the celebrated author/ philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson. Two years after her father died suddenly and a year after her mother died, Theodore Lyman (who had worked for her father) married her when she was just fourteen years old and therefore inherited her substantial fortune. He invested in buying ships for the West India Trade that went on to make him an even larger fortune. Sarah died ten years after her father, and two of her four children died young. Her husband remarried Lydia Williams and had several more children.
