He was the younger brother of Lachlan, 11th Chief of Clan Cluny Macpherson. He lived at Skinner's Row in Edinburgh and married Jane, daughter of James Anderson, Merchant, of Edinburgh. They were the parents of the swashbuckling Captain John Macpherson who settled in Philadelphia.
