He was preceded in the Presidency by Grover Cleveland and serving one term in office for the Republican Party he was re-elected again in 1900 only to be assassinated in 1901 when his then Vice-President, Theodore Roosevelt, stepped in to replace him. His first Vice-President was Garret Hobart who died in 1899 and was replaced by Theodore Roosevelt. In 1871, McKinley married Ida Saxton but tragically both their daughters died in early childhood.
