Payne Whitney (1876-1927)

(William) Payne Whitney, of 972 Fifth Avenue & "Greentree" Manhasset, New York

He inherited $63 million from his uncle (Oliver Hazard Payne) and $25 million from his father, using part of that inheritance to establish the now world-famous Payne Whitney Psychiatric Clinic. By the time he died in 1927, he was worth just under $179 million which The New York Times declared to be, "the largest estate ever appraised in this country". Most of his fortune was wrapped up in the stocks left to him by his uncle which had grown exponentially in just ten years. He lived between 972 Fifth Avenue and "Greentree" at Manhasset on Long Island's North Shore.
