Averell Cottage

40 Lake Street, Cooperstown, Otsego County, New York

Built in 1793, for James Averell II (1763-1835) and his wife Marcia Holt (1766-1834). Having been extended several times over the years to its current 6,000 square feet, it is the central portion with chimneys at either end that constitutes the original structure. James purchased the property (a tannery) in 1792 from John Howard who in turn had acquired it from the founder of Cooperstown, William Cooper (1754-1809) of Otsego Hall, father of the famous author James Fenimore Cooper (1789-1851)....
