Carrollcliffe Castle

Tarrytown, New York

Built between 1897 and 1910, for the multi-talented Brigadier-General Howard Carroll (1854-1916). Carrollcliffe is one of the three magnificent castles that were built at Tarrytown, including Ericstan and Lyndhurst. Carroll's 45-room castle was designed by the architect Henry Franklin Kilburn (1844-1905) and built on an estate of 64-acres overlooking the Hudson River. It remained in the Carroll family until 1940 when it was sold the following year to Emerson and Ruth Axe for $45,000. They converted it into the headquarters of their investment firm and renamed it Axe Castle.
