Mount Stephen House

1440 Drummond Street, Montreal, Quebec

Completed in 1883, for George Stephen (1829-1921), 1st Lord Mount Stephen, and his first wife, Annie Kane (1830-1896). In 1880, the Stephens commissioned architect William Tutin Thomas (1829-1892), the same who built the Shaughnessy House, to build them a new mansion on Drummond Street. But, just five years after it was completed, the Mount Stephen's left Montreal for England. From 1888, the mansion became the home of George's brother-in-law, Robert Meighen (1837-1911)....

It was passed to their only daughter, Elsie Reford, who sold the mansion 1926. From then until 2012, the mansion was a private club, known as the Mount Stephen Club. It was enlarged several times over the years, notably in 1927 and in the 1950s.
