Dr. Charles Carroll Lee (1838-1893)

M.D., of 79 Madison Avenue, New York; President of the Medical Society of New York

He was born at Philadelphia and soon afterwards moved to Maryland with his parents. He was a paternal grandson of Thomas Sim Lee, Governor of Maryland, and a descendant of the Lees of Virginia; a great-grandson of Charles Carroll of Carrollton, Signer of the U.S. Declaration of Independence; and, a great-grandson of Benjamin Chew, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania. He was educated at St. Mary's College, Emmetsburg, before graduating (1859) with his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. From the start to the end of the Civil War he was an Assistant-Surgeon in the Union Army and from 1867 settled permanently in New York.

In New York, he was appointed Surgeon in St. Vincent's Hospital and in the Charity Hospital on Blackwell's Island; and, later served in the same capacity at the Women's Hospital. At the time of his death, he was President of the Medical Society of the County of New York; Member of the Academy of Medicine; Member of the Pathological Society of New York; Professor of Gynaecology at the Post-Graduate Hospital; and attending Physician at the New York Foundling Asylum. In 1863, he married Helen, daughter of Dr. Isaac Parrish, Physician & Abolitionist, of Philadelphia. They lived at 79 Madison Avenue in New York and he was survived by 5-children (two sons and three daughters) including Helen Peabody wife of the architect in the famous Boston firm of Peabody & Stearns.
