Frederic William Rhinelander (1796-1836)

F.W. Rhinelander, of New York & Providence, Rhode Island

He preferred books and literature to business. When he died, his 4-children were still minors and therefore his estate was held in trust by Mrs Rhinelander's brother-in-law (the children's uncle). This worked well for the uncle, but not for the family. The family spent most of their time at Mrs Rhinelander's father's (General Ebenezer Stevens') house  in Astoria, New York, overlooking the Hell Gate, opposite the Astor Mansion. Frederic was the grandfather of the author Edith Wharton.
