Smith Thompson Van Buren (1817-1876)

He was named for his father's close friend, Smith Thompson, Chief Justice of New York. His second wife was a niece of the prominent author, Washington Irving, who had lived at Lindenwald while tutor to the children of William P. Van Ness.
