Moulton Castle

Ferry Road, Newburyport, Essex County, Massachusetts

Built 1868, for Captain Henry William Moulton (1833-1896) and his wife Susan Floyd Whittemore. The Captain's family had owned the land around Moulton Hill for the previous six generations. He built his 22-room castle on the summit of Moulton Hill enjoying spectacular views over the Merrimack River and towards Amesbury's Point. It was actually built of wood that was carved to resemble stone. On 4th July, 1869, he christened his new home with a party for 500 guests. When Ulysses S. Grant appointed him U.S. Marshal for Idaho, for the four years he was away Sir Edward Thornton (1817-1906), the British Minister to the United States, summered here with his family. Just four years after Captain Moulton died the castle was sold to Charles W. Moseley (1847-1920) who had it demolished in December, 1900. It is remembered by a poem penned by Charles Clinton Jones entitled Moulton Castle and the still extant Winnekenni Castle just down the road at Haverhill is essentially an identical copy.
