R. Fulton Cutting House

Tower Hill Road, Tuxedo, Orange County, New York

Completed in 1889, at the request of Pierre Lorillard IV who conceptualized and developed Tuxedo Park. It took two years to build and on completion was sold to H.G. Barnwell and then to Belle Bateman before being acquired in 1892 by the resident for whom it is named, R. Fulton Cutting. Set in front of a circular drive and surrounded by woodland, it's positioned back from Tower Hill Road at the intersection of Clubhouse and Serpentine Roads. It was designed by Bruce Price in clapboard and stucco (with an octagonal library) and its unusual shape - two wings coming off a central domed tower, one at an angle - has been compared to The Homestead at Lenox, Massachusetts...

The Cuttings (members of Mrs Astor's hallowed '400') lived between here and the magnificently sturdy Cutting Mansion off Madison Avenue which was said to have cost $200,000. Their summer home that measured 75-feet long by 30-feet deep was considerably cheaper, coming in at $14,000. By 1976, it was home to Dale and Amanda Jenkins but otherwise its history remains opaque.
