The Moorings

32 Lake Shore Drive, Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan

Built in 1910, for Russell Alexander Alger Jr. (1873-1930) and his wife, Marion Jarves (b.1875). In 1980, the Michigan Society of Architects placed this Italian Renaissance house as one of the 50 most significant buildings in the state. Their home that directly overlooks Lake St. Clair at Grosse Pointe was designed by Charles Pratt and the gardens were laid out by Ellen Shipman. Today, "The Moorings" is better known as the Grosse Point War Memorial or the Russell A. Alger Jr. House and is a popular wedding venue....
Russell Alger grew up at the Governor Alger Mansion in Detroit. A pioneering businessman with a flare for invention and innovation, he was perhaps best known as the Vice-President of the Packard Motor Company. His wife is perhaps best remembered today for founding the neighbourhood club thrift shop at Grosse Point that still operates today.
