Alexander Auldjo (1758-1821)

Lt.-Col. The Hon. Alexander Auldjo, J.P., of Montreal & London

He was born in Aberdeen, Scotland, the son of a prominent merchant and the brother of the Lord Provost of Aberdeen. He came to Montreal around 1778 and became involved in the fur trade as a senior partner in the firm of Maitland, Garden & Auldjo who were also involved in the export of wheat and the importing of goods from England. In 1796, he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Lower Canada for Montreal West and was named a Justice of the Peace. He was a warden of Trinity House, Quebec. He served in the local militia and was promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel during the War of 1812. He was agent for the Phoenix Assurance Company of London in Upper and Lower Canada and later for the Pelican Life Assurance Company. He returned to England in 1813. In 1817, he became a shareholder in the Bank of Montreal.

In 1804, he married Eweretta, daughter of Thomas and Helen (Phyn) Richardson, of Portsoy, Banffshire. She was the sister of John Richardson, one of the leading merchants in Montreal. The Auldjos were the parents of two sons: (1) John, the first Briton to climb Mont Blanc (2) Thomas, married Anna McGillivray, of Chateau Saint-Antoine
