Born at Glasgow, he was educated privately in Montreal before entering McGill University where he took first rank honours in Natural Science and won the Logan Gold Medal. After graduation, he became a partner in his father's dry goods business (Messrs. Robertson, Stephen & Co.). But, he retired in 1885 to travel the world. He travelled via New Zealand, Australia, India, Egypt, and Palestine. On returning to Montreal he was made Secretary Treasurer of the Harbour Commissioners and was appointed a Justice of the Peace. He was a life Governor of the Montreal General Hospital and served as a Captain in the 1st Prince of Wales Rifle Regiment from 1873 to 1880.
