Andrew Hamersley (1725-1819)

He was an importer of foreign goods in New York City and made a considerable fortune before the American Revolution. But, siding with the British, he lost that fortune only to have it restored after he inherited fortune accrued by his maternal uncle, Louis Carré, a West Indies merchant. He invested the most part of that fortune into New York real estate. He was married twice. His first wife was Margaret, was the daughter of Colonel Gabriel Stelle, of Perth Amboy and maternal grand-daughter of Thomas Gordon, one of the original 27-proprietors of New Jersey and the State's Chief Justice. They were the parents of three sons and two daughters. At their home on Hanover Square, the Hamersley family were noted for their "refinement and hospitality".
