Angus Cameron Hooper (1826-1884)

Angus C. Hooper, Manager of the British Bank of North America, Montreal

He was born in Sussex, England, and came to Canada in the early 1850s in the service of the British Bank of North America of which he became manager of the head office at Montreal. He was one of the auditors of the Grand Trunk Railway, a director of several English insurance companies, and a Governor of the Montreal General Hospital. When he died he was associated with William Dow & Co., Brewers, of Montreal, and was, "recognized among the leading commercial men of Montreal as a man of sterling integrity and sound common sense". In 1855, at Montreal, he married Catherine Robertson, grand-daughter of the 8th Laird of Kindrochit. Through their daughter, Maud, they were the great-grandparents of the infamous Soviet double agent and defector, Guy Burgess, member of the Cambridge Five spy circle.
