Benjamin Gates (1737-1797)

Captain Benjamin Gates, of Barre, Massachusetts

During the French and Indian War he was a private in Captain Phelps' Company and relieved Fort William Henry in 1757. He responded to the Lexington Alarm in April, 1775 and saw service during the Siege of Boston. He was commissioned a Lieutenant in June, 1775, commanding a company in Colonel Rufus Putnam's Regiment at New York. On Colonel Putnam's recommendation he was commissioned a Captain, July, 1776. He was at Stillwater in 1777, and resigned his commission in January, 1778. His wife was the half-sister of Deacon John Mason (1725-1784), of Barre, Massachusetts.
