Dr. Friedrich Muller (1824-1892)

Dr. Friedrich/Frederick Müller, of Montreal; Homeopathic Physician

He was born at Oschersleben in Prussia where his father was a country physician who'd practiced homeopathy since 1826. He was educated at the University of Halberstadt before studying medicine at the universities of Halle and Greifswald. Having qualified as a Surgeon and Physician he proceeded to study homeopathy under his father and uncle, Dr Kohlmann. In Leipsic, he became acquainted with the oldest homeopaths who had studied under Dr Hahnemann. But, dissatisfied with the politics in his homeland, he emigrated to the United States in 1849. Arriving in New York he went to Philadelphia with letters of introduction for Dr Hering. But, then unable to speak English he had to remain in rural Pennsylvania until 1853 when he travelled extensively through the States before making his way to New Orleans to help with the Yellow Fever epidemic, eventually catching it himself and very nearly falling victim to it.

Returning north, he stopped off at Boston where his friend Dr. Wesselhoeft persuaded him to run the Hydropathic Institution at Brattleboro from 1857. It was during this time that he met and married his wife Mary, "a handsome and accomplished Boston lady" and the widow of Cyrus Alger Jr. From 1859, they settled in Montreal where he became a respected practitioner of homeopathy and served as the Registrar for the Montreal College of Homeopathic Surgeons & Physicians. After the death of his first wife (by whom he was stepfather to three daughters and father to one) he married the daughter of the noted English surgeon, Dr Thomas Tatum, of St. George's Hospital, London. He died of the same heart condtion that carried off both his father and his brother. He was remembered in 'The North American Journal of Homeopathy' as, "a brilliant and courteous physician".
